Critical Home Repair Program
“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear
and the blind can see.”- Mark Twain
A Brush with Kindness is a program that addresses critical home repairs needed by existing low income homeowners unable to fund urgent repairs when they unexpectedly arise. The program incorporates the same Habitat/Home Owner Family partnership model as our new home construction program. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and we recognize the need in the community for assistance to low income homeowners who have urgent home repair issues and limited resources.
A Brush with Kindness is a program that addresses critical needs for low income homeowners and includes projects involving exterior repairs, weatherization, and unexpected critical repairs. The program is an effort to serve low-income homeowners unable to fund urgent home repair and maintenance needs. Volunteers work alongside the homeowner to complete the repairs. A Brush with Kindness is an extension of Habitat’s core building program. It allows us to serve a different population, yet follows the same basic tenets for eligibility — need, ability to pay, willingness to partner— and stays within the Habitat model of providing a hand up, not a handout.
Once it is determined that the home repair is within the scope of Habitat’s ability to assist, the partner family agrees to work with our volunteers to make the repairs. The cost of the repairs are initially funded by Habitat and the family is given a no-interest loan with affordable payments to repay the costs. Repayment helps to insure long-term sustainability of the program.
